Why does lunar eclipse take place? Why does moon pass through the path of the shadow of the earth while roaming in the sky? This will happen only when the sun, the earth and the moon will all come in a straight line. Therefore, when the three come in a straight line, then the moon if passes through the shadow of the Earth, lunar eclipse occurs. The Sun and the Earth are always on the ecliptic at an angle of about 5 degrees. So, the Moon may or may not be on or very near the ecliptic when the Earth is in between the Sun and the Moon, i.e., on Poornima or full-moon night. When the Moon passes through the ecliptic, it cuts the ecliptic at two points/nodes. The cut-point of the moon can be ascending or descending i.e, Rahu or Ketu, respectively. On July 16,201 9 AD on Wednesday, we will be experiencing a total lunar eclipse. It will be visible all over India. The tangent times of this eclipse according to Indian standard Time are as follows: -
The Moon is eclipsed when it moves within the shadow of the earth and the Sun is eclipsed when the Moon obstruct the light of the Sun or the Earth reaches in the shadow of the Moon. Lunar eclipse takes place in Purnima and Solar eclipse falls on Amavasya but these phenonmeana do not occur at every Amavasya or Purnima. The explanation for it is that the orbit of moon is inclined at an angle of 5d nearly to earth's orbit.
